Diabetes: type 1 diabetes and its symptoms.
The diabetes indicates that the level of glucose, or sugar , is very high in the blood. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does
not produce insulin. Insulin is a
hormone that helps glucose to enter cells to give them energy. Without insulin, there is an excess of
glucose that remains in the blood. Over
time, high blood glucose levels can cause serious problems in your heart , eyes , kidneys , nerves , gums
and teeth.
Type 1 diabetes occurs most often in children and
young adults, but can appear at any age. Symptoms
may include:
·
Very thirsty
·
Frequent urination
·
Feeling very hungry or tired
·
Spontaneous weight loss
·
Presence of sores that take time to
heal
·
Dry skin and itching
·
Loss of sensation or tingling in the
feet
·
Blurred vision
A blood test can show if you have diabetes. If so, you should take insulin the
rest of your life. A blood test
called A1c can check how you are managing your
diabetes.
